Filmmaker Deadline Looms For San Antonio Film Festival

A film festival is one of those metrics by which city’s art scene is measured and the San Antonio Film Festival has been growing slowly for the last 20 years.

"What we do is screen films. They’re San Antonio filmmakers and they’re also filmmakers from around the world," said festival Executive Director Adam Rocha.

"And this is for seven fantastic days running July 28 through August 3," he said.

The film fest is still quite far off, but he is gathering films and filmmakers need to know they have a couple of deadlines to meet.

"Late deadline is February 14 and the extended deadline is March 14," he said.

What can you expect at the San Antonio Film Festival?

"It’s really exciting," he said. "It’s just a big party for seven days so as an audience you can expect a series of documentaries, of narrative feature films, of short films, animation and experimental pieces. Definitely family films. And the themes range and vary in size. It’s just a cornucopia of high art."

Noting how many interesting films he must see, I asked if he finds himself ever thinking, "Oh, why didn’t I think of that? It’s so good!"

"Yeah," Rocha laughed, "the ideas that these artists, these filmmakers come up with are so awesome! There’s one film I just saw, it’s a short documentary and it’s about 'graphers' he explained. "These are like people who go around the country getting autographs from baseball players. This college kid, I think he makes $8,000 in four days."

This sounds like a film at which you'd want to take notes. Copious notes.
