First Fine Arts Concert Features USAF Spectrum Winds

First Baptist Church's ongoing music program begins its fall/winter season on Oct. 26, Sunday. I spoke to the church’s Aaron Hufty about the first performance, by a group called Spectrum Winds.

"Well this is a group of young professional musicians, who  are part of the USAF Band of the West, stationed at Lackland Air Force Base. This quintet plays a wide variety of chamber music and so we’re looking forward to hosting them this Sunday at our church.”

“This is the first in a series called First Fine Arts, an endeavor to bring culture and faith together. It’s just about providing opportunity for world-class music to be performed in a beautiful space. And mostly free of charge; most all of our concerts are free. We have a wide variety, from jazz, to chamber music, to organ concerts, to choral events, and [the] Soli Chamber Ensemble is coming in the spring, so it’s quite a variety. And we’re very pleased to be able to offer that right in the heart of the city.”

Huffy describes Spectrum Winds’ performance this way:

"Very high quality. [They will play] some things from their standard repertoire, whether Mozart or Haydn, but [they will] also play some very contemporary things. But what you can expect is some very good, good music.”

It all happens this Sunday afternoon.

“The First Baptist Church is at 515 McCullough downtown, right next to the brand new Tobin Center. We share lots of space with them. It’s 3 o’clock, free, in our main sanctuary.”
