A retired army sergeant is facing up to 20 years in federal prison for shooting an Army captain at Fort Sam Houston.
52-year-old Alvin Roundtree pled guilty in federal court Wednesday on one count of assaulting an officer or employee of the United States with a deadly weapon. He admitted to shooting his live-in girlfriend multiple times after she told him she was leaving him.
The shooting happened in June of last year, when, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office, Roundtree entered the post and went to the Medical Training Facility, where Captain Mona McFadden was an instructor.
They argued, and Roundtree pulled out a handgun, shooting McFadden in the arm. He then fired six more times as she tried to run away, hitting her several times in the torso and in the leg.
McFadden was immediately taken into surgery and survived the incident. However, Roundtree, who has been in custody since his arrest on the post last June, faces additional charges of conspiracy to kill a federal witness, to prevent McFadden from testifying against him in the shooting case. His nephew, 29-year-old Leonard Roundtree, Jr. of Richardson, TX, is also charged as a conspirator in the alleged murder-for-hire scheme. His trial is set for next month.
Roundtree faces up to 20 years in prison in the shooting. His sentencing is scheduled for September.
