The Future Of Newspapers In San Antonio, Changes At The Express-News

Express News

The Source: A great city must have a great newspaper, and right now our paper, the Hearst-owned San Antonio Express-News, is going through a metamorphosis with a new editor guiding the local bullpen.

That editor is Mike Leary, a Pulitzer Prize-winning editor from his days at the Philadelphia Inquirer where he was deputy managing editor of news and investigations.

While there’s no doubt that Leary is a newspaperman through and through, many wondered if he would "get" San Antonio’s unique culture. Still others are wondering if he is up to the challenge of giving San Antonio the great paper it deserves while satisfying the demand of quarterly profit growth for Hearst, one of the world’s largest communications companies.

Leary has now been at the helm of the paper for six months and readers are seeing his vision on the page and online -- most dramatically now with the paper’s redesign.

"There's a lot of talk about newspapers are on their last legs, but in fact in San Antonio, and realistically in many places around the country, newspapers still make money, they are still at the central part of a community's conversation. We not only are still profitable and expect to be here for a while, but we wanted to add some sections to the paper."

Listen to the full show to hear Leary talk about the changes:

  • New Business sections and the daily breakdown of material
  • Enterprise reporting projects
  • Online paywall and strategy
