Google Fiber Report Details Increased Access For Low-Income Families

Google Fiber released its first national Community Impact Report detailing how the company has broadened broadband access to low-income families.

The report says Google Fiber has made it possible for more than 1,900 families to access gigabit speeds free of charge and supported 115,000 hours of digital literacy training, to assist hundreds of thousands of families bridge the digital divide. One in four San Antonio households lack Internet access according to the Census Bureau.

“We invest in making sure folks on the other side of the digital divide have the tools and resources to become broadband adopters,” says San Antonio Google Fiber Community Impact Manager Clarissa Ramon.

She says despite San Antonio not having Google Fiber yet, the city is included in the report for several efforts including 5,000 hours of digital literacy training, and its Google fellows.

“San Antonio has two amazing digital inclusion fellows one of them is placed at the San Antonio Housing Authority, one is placed at the public library.”

The fellows bolster digital literacy and inclusion efforts. She says they assisted city and community leaders in organizing the recent Digital Inclusion Summit on March 1.

Ramon says Google Fiber is still committed to building in San Antonio, but the company has presented no plan to address community concerns that led to the city pausing construction of new Google Fiber infrastructure huts in mid January.
