A prolific actor/writer/producer with San Antonio roots brings his new production back to the city that helped spawn it.
"I'm Jaston Williams. I'm what's left of him," he laughed.
You probably first heard of Jaston Williams from the wildly successful Greater Tuna production he co-wrote and acted in, or its three subsequent iterations since. Now he has a completely new one.
"It's called A Wolverine Walks Into A Bar: Conversations Over Ice. And it's a series of monologues. It's very comic, but it's also poignant. And there's just a lot of stuff in this piece that has to do with San Antonio."
Williams says back in the day San Antonio Theater was his training ground, and it kept him from starving. As with the best storytellers, he clearly has a love of humanity.
"He says I know an old woman who lives off Zarzamora. She's got 14 Chihuahuas buried in the front yard, half of them named Chula. And every Sunday before mass she cleans each plastic rose."

"I even have a place in this play about a bar in San Antonio. There used to be a bar that was on an access road to a freeway, and the owner got the bar really cheap because they were doing construction, for years," he chuckled. "And you had to go half a block on a one way street the wrong way to get to the parking lot. You couldn't walk into the bar without breaking the law!" he laughed. "Hello, San Antonio! I love ya!"
Wolverine begins Thursday for two weeks at the Classic Theater, Friday and Saturday nights plus Sunday matinees.
"This play is kind of a love letter to San Antonio in many ways."
