The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center's annual holiday event kicks off Friday. It's called Hecho a Mano, a title that's an exacting description.
"Hecho a Mano stands for Made by Hand. We're celebrating our 30th year anniversary," says the Guadalupe's Mark Anthony Martinez.
Those things that were made by hand were made by between 30 and 35 artists from San Antonio and elsewhere with a wide variety of media.
"We're going to have traditional fine art, like 2D paintings. And then we'll also have 3D sculptural work. You'll see contemporary crafts as well as more traditional crafts, like jewelry from Mexico, jewelry from local Chicana artists."
Martinez says that the art will mostly be hung in the Guadalupe's gallery, museum style, but will all be for sale.
"If you want something unique, come to Hecho a Mano. We're going to have one-of-a-kind items, folks that put a lot of love and care into what they make, unlike places like big box stores."
This 30th Anniversary Hecho a Mano honors one of the Guadalupe's original staff, Kathy Vargas.
"She was the original visual arts director here at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, and was one of the original founders of the center."
Martinez says the event goes on the whole weekend.
"Yes, Friday, Saturday and Sunday; 6 to 9 (p.m.) on Friday, as well as 12 (noon) to 6 (p.m.) on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday and Sunday we'll have food trucks parked outside, so you could spend all day here."
