Reporter Details Former Border Protection Watchdog’s Account of Corruption

This summer the former head of the internal watchdog office at U.S. Customs and Border Protection was removed from his post and reassigned. That was after an independent report revealed his agency didn't do enough to investigate deadly shootings by border patrol agents.

In an unauthorized interview this month with the Center for Investigative Reporting,  James Tomsheck told reporter Andrew Becker that his removal was meant to deflect controversy over the agency’s use-of-force policies. Tomsheck also claimed corruption has been a bigger problem than the CBP admits, and that the deaths of at least seven of the 28 people killed by border patrol agents since 2010 were – in his words – “highly suspect.”

Fronteras’ Travis Bubenik of Marfa Public Radio spoke with Becker about those claims.
