Heavy Rain, Possible Flooding, Expected Through Friday

National Weather Service
From @NWSsanantonio on Twitter: Rainfall Expectations through Friday showing increasing rainfall amounts especially on Thursday.

Anywhere from 3 to 6 inches of rain is expected to fall in parts of South Texas as a Flash Flood Watch remains in effect until Thursday.

San Antonio and Bexar County are under a Flash Flood Warning until 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

A heavy thunderstorm that entered Bexar County around 2:30 p.m. dropped ¾-inch of water according to a rain gauge at the San Antonio airport run by the National Weather Service.

Paul Yura, warning coordination meteorologist with the NWS, says due to the already saturated ground even small amounts of rain can cause flood.

“Much like we saw last May, each round of thunderstorms just makes it worse, and worse, and worse, and so it’s not to say that we’re going to get just 1 to 2-inches of rain, but 1 to 2-inches of rain could cause substantial flooding in these conditions.”

The rains have already proven to be deadly elsewhere in Texas especially Washington County, which is between Austin and Houston.

“We lost four people just this past week to people driving in low water crossings, when they knew it was low water crossings, and knew it was flooded,” Yura says. “When it is heavy rain, don’t take the chance, there is no reason to be on the road if you don’t have to be and by far, stay at home if you don’t have to be commuting around because the roads around here are deadly when they become flash-flooding like that.”

Storms that rolled through midday today left about 7,000 CPS Energy customers without power.
