The San Antonio Choral Society’s 49th performing season starts October 15, so Music Director Jennifer Seighman dropped by the studio with a preview.

“We will have four major concerts," she said. "The first one is 'The Hills Are Alive: Music of Bavaria and Austria' and this is in anticipation of our choir tour to Bavaria and Austria, and also to help us get started celebrating Octoberfest this month."

Seighman said the "Hills Are Alive" performance will contain selections from "The Sound of Music."

"The second concert will be the 'Britten St. Nicholas' in December, and then we’ll do a pops concert -- Beatlemania -- in March. And then our final concert of the season will be in May, 'My Spirit Sang All Day,' which will be an eclectic mix of choral works new and old, some spirituals, some American music, some chants, some English works."

Those who sing with the 80 person choir must give an audition and a serious commitment of effort.

“Mainly just working professionals from the community, some retired individuals, some people that have been school teachers for a number of years," she said. "We have architects, accountants, lawyers, we currently have five students that are under our mentorship program."

The San Antonio Choral Society augments its regular season during the holidays with occasional miniature flash mobs, singing Christmas carols at undisclosed locations.

“It’s neat to see the look on their faces when that happens.”
