Downtown San Antonio is now a federal historic district, including the River Walk and about 200 buildings in the area.
The city spent $45,000on the application for an official designation in the National Register of Historic Places, but will get a return on investment in the millions for property owners collectively in the district.
Historic properties are protected on the state and federal level, and may be eligible for tax credits that could cover up to 45 percentof renovation-related expenses.
