Kerrville's Symphony of the Hills performs this weekend. TPR's Jack Morgan got a preview from their conductor and artistic director Gene Dowdy.
"It's called A Night at the Movies. We're going to be featuring music from some of the greatest movies of all time," he says.
It's a really diverse collection, too, I noted to him. Dowdy laughed.
"You noticed? What I like about it is that you can start the concert with that iconic music from Gone With The Wind," Dowdy says, humming a few bars to me. "Then we'll jump right into music from Frozen. So even people bringing their kids are going to recognize Do You Want to Build a Snowman? and Let It Go," he says. "
We're also going to feature two wonderful soloists: Kara Joy Baker, a soprano; and Michael Call singing two beautiful arias from Les Miserables."
They're also going to do music from the Broadway, then Hollywood smash Annie.
"That is about as uplifting as you can get--going from It's a Hard-Knock Life to Tomorrow," he says.
But then it takes a turn toward the scary.
"We're going to end the first half with John Williams' signature edition, music from Jaws. When you hear it played by a 75-piece orchestra on stage, it is ferocious!" Dowdy says with delight.
"We're going to have Linda Poetschke, a soprano from UTSA, singing Evergreen and The Way We Were. We'll also be bringing music from The Wizard of Oz."
He says the Saturday night concert at the Kathleen Cailloux Theater will be a treat.
"This orchestra plays beautifully and it's just going to be a wonderful day for the community and the Hill Country."
