Listeria Woes Continue, Sabra Classic Hummus Recalled

The FDA has announced that Sabra Dipping Company is voluntarily recalling 30,000 cases of its Classic Hummus due to possible listeria contamination. The FDA published a list of the affected SKUs.

The hummus items being recalled are only those of the “Classic” flavor variety and are packaged in a variety of sizes for distribution in retail stores throughout the U.S.

HEB told Texas Public Radio this morning that it has pulled all of the Classic Sabra Hummus from all of its stores.  HEB Spokeswoman Dya Campos said no other Sabra products have been affected at this time.

The Sabra recall, however, comes on the heels of several food recalls for possible listeria contamination.

Late last month, three organic food companies that were using spinach in their food recalled many items over listeria concerns. Amy’s Kitchen voluntarily recalled about 74,000 cases of frozen and prepackaged vegetarian products containing spinach, including vegetable lasagna, tofu scramble, enchilada verde meal, brown rice and vegetables bowl, spinach pizza,  the stuffed pasta shells bowl, the gluten-free tofu scramble and the breakfast wrap.

Wegmans Food Markets then recalled more than 10,000 packages of their 12 oz. organic spinach, and the Carmel Food Group issued a voluntary recall of some of its Rising Moon Organics frozen ravioli items, again due to listeria concerns.

Late Wednesday, the Centers for Disease Control issued a statement that put the blame squarely on Brenham, Texas-based Blue Bell Creameries for a listeriosis outbreak. “This is a complex and ongoing multistate outbreak of listeriosis occurring over an extended period. The outbreak now consists of two clusters involving people infected with outbreak strains of Listeria monocytogenes; eight people are reported from Kansas (5) and Texas (3),” said the statement

It continued, “Listeriosis is a life-threatening infection caused by eating food contaminated with the bacterium (germ) Listeria monocytogenes. People at high risk for listeriosis include pregnant women, adults 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems.”

The CDC has recommended that people do not eat any Blue Bell brand products made at their Oklahoma production facility. You can find more on the recalled Blue Bell products here.
