Fact Checking The Second Presidential Debate

Democratic Presidential nominee Hillary Rodham Clinton and Republican Presidential nomineeDonald Trump

Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton face off in the second presidential debate Sunday night at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

The debate comes at a time of heightened tension in the campaign, to say the least. After the Washington Post last Friday published a 2005 video showing Donald Trump making lewd comments and bragging about sexual assault, he offered an apology. Many prominent Republicans have even called for Trump to step aside, something he has said he will not do.

Meanwhile, Wikileaks released a batch of Hillary Clinton's emails on Friday, in which the candidate seems to advocate for "open trade and open borders."

Finally, in a Facebook Live video just hours before tonight's debate, Trump presented a woman who claims former President Bill Clinton raped her four decades ago, and that Mrs. Clinton helped cover it up. Tonight's contest, a Town Hall-style format, will be interesting. You can watch live video courtesy PBS NewsHour in the embedded window below, and follow along with the live fact-check below that.

NPR's politics team, with help from reporters and editors who cover national security, immigration, business, foreign policy and more, is live annotating the debate. Portions of the debate with added analysis are highlighted, followed by context and fact check from NPR reporters and editors.
