Love In Art And Music: Inspirations Of Aphrodite And More From Musical Offerings
Joan Christenson opens season at the San Antonio Museum of Art
Artists and composers have been inspired by mythology for a long time, and when it comes to the "goddess of love," there are volumes of works for Aphrodite (Venus to the Romans) in art and music. Mixing music with the visiting exhibit of "Aphrodite and the Gods of Love" was easy for Joan Christenson, the artistic director of Musical Offerings.
"There are so many wonderful pieces to choose from, it was a labor of love" laughs Christenson. The program spans several periods of music, from the baroque to the 20th Century. "We found this great piece by William Bolcom, Praxiteles Aphrodite, which you probably don't know, but will love!"
There are two concerts, one at 6 p.m. and another following at 8 p.m., with a reception at 7:15 p.m.. "Stay after the first performance, or come early for the second performance, and have a glass of wine with us!"
