Mariachi Las Coronelas: 'Our Goal Is To Unite Audiences'

Since its opening last year, Jazz, TX hasn’t limited itself to its namesake musical style. Folk, rock, blues, and even classical musicians have taken the stage at the cozy spot beneath the Pearl’s new food hall. One audience favorite over the past year has been Mariachi Las Coronelas, an all-female ensemble led by Vanessa del Fierro.

The group distinguishes itself not only by its presence on stage, but the variety of music they perform. You’re just as likely to hear something made famous by Johnny Cash as you are a song from the Vicente Fernández songbook.

“There’s a lot of mariachi groups that just stick to the traditional sones, and we’ve been doing that for a very long time, but we also listen to other music,” del Fierro explains. “I felt the need to put in what we like as well. We not only like mariachi but we like other music, and I wanted to incorporate that with the instrumentation that we have.”

Mariachi las Coronelas sings in Spanish and English, and plays songs that both cultures know and love.

“Our idea is to unite both audiences and perform for everyone.”

Hear the group Live At Jazz, TX Saturday night, September 16 at 7 p.m. on Texas Public Radio, or in the Soundcloud link below.
