The San Antonio City Council is expected to hear what possible scenarios could play out with the move of a Triple-A baseball team to the Alamo City.
There’s been a lot of hearsay and rumors of what it would take to get a Triple-A Baseball team in downtown.
San Antonio Mayor Ivy Taylor’s office has been in conversations with Elmore Sports Group over the past few weeks including a meeting that took place Wednesday afternoon. Elmore owns the Missions AA-Baseball Team in San Antonio as well as the AAA Sky Sox team in Colorado Springs.
Taylor wouldn’t go into many details about what took place in the meeting. The mayor says there was discussion about what could happen to the Missions if a new team comes in.
“We talked a little bit about that, of course from my perspective I don’t have any control over the decisions the different leagues and franchise owners make. They have to decide that amongst themselves.”
Many would consider San Antonio ready for a major league team instead of minor leagues.
However, Taylor says she feels Triple-A is a natural first step. “We conducted a study several years ago that showed San Antonio is a great market for Triple-A in a downtown stadium," she said. "And also major league ball is going to be a lot more expensive as far as building a facility. We have a lot of other needs in our community we need to balance as well.”
Elmore is expected to make a presentation at this morning’s council meeting at the request of Mayor Taylor.
