Former San Antonio Police Chief William McManus is expected to take his job back as the head of the city’s police department. The decision comes after the city manager interviewed five other candidates for the position.
McManus left the position as Chief in December to manage the security of CPS Energy. While he enjoyed his time at CPS, he says he felt the city was the right place to be. “My sweet spot is the community; my sweet spot is being a member of the city team, on making decisions that help make the city better.”
During the interview process of five other candidates, City Manager Sheryl Sculley said McManus approached her to return to the city.
“In the final analysis Chief McManus came out on top, and someone said to me yesterday ‘well he didn’t apply for the position,’ and my response was ‘he’s applied for the position for the past nine years and demonstrated his performance as chief of police,’” Sculley said.
Sculley asked McManus for a two year commitment to which he agreed He’ll be paid his old salary of $212,000. McManus will take the position of police chief on October 5th pending a confirmation by city council on October 1st. He says one of his top priorities will be working on ways to assist the homeless population. Anthony Trevino, who has served as interim chief and was being considered for the full time job, will become chief of staff for McManus.
