A Message from Our President

A Message from Our president

Dear Friends,

I have used this space to laud our fabulous staff and to heap praise on our wonderful listeners and supporters. There are so many amazing people who make it possible for Texas Public Radio to do its great work. Today, I’d like to recognize some folks who are particularly generous to TPR -- our Board of Directors. They are, collectively and effectively, my boss. They establish the vision and strategic goals for TPR, and oversee our progress toward those goals.  They are trusted advisors, providing guidance, insight and expertise.  They are enthusiastic ambassadors. And they work very hard to ensure that well-qualified and dedicated new Directors are identified and recruited to join as serving Directors reach their term limits.  They spend many hours working on behalf of TPR, out of dedication to its mission and our community.

Over time, it’s my intent to introduce you to all the members of our Board of Directors, but inspired by the title of one of our KPAC programs, I’ll start “From the Top.” For us, the top is our Board Chair, Tim Swan.  We are very fortunate that among his commitments to his family, his demanding job as CEO of Metropolitan Contracting Company and his extensive civic involvement, Tim finds significant time to devote to TPR. Serving on the TPR Board since 2010, Tim’s work on various committees and as Board Secretary brought him to the lead role. He is now in his second year as Chair.

Most notable in his efforts on TPR’s behalf is Tim’s work spearheading the efforts to find a new, permanent home for Texas Public Radio. His expertise in commercial real estate and construction has proven invaluable. He led a disciplined, thoughtful and thorough process of identifying and evaluating a long list of various possible locations. It was that process that led to the historic Alameda Theater becoming our preferred choice of a new location, at the center of San Antonio’s history, culture, commerce, and ecological development. Discussions about that possibility are ongoing and complex.  I am optimistic that they will come to fruition. If they do, it will be in large part to the credit of Tim’s calm and caring approach with all of the many parties who have an interest in the future of the Alameda Theater and TPR, and his skill at facilitating and building consensus.

From the Metropolitan Contracting Company website:

CEO Tim Swan entered the commercial real estate industry in 1978 and co-founded two successful companies, Aequus Real Estate Services and Lee Partners, before launching Metropolitan Contracting Company with Steve Schuetze in 1986.

Tim is professionally affiliated with the Real Estate Council of San Antonio, The President’s Council, Associated Builders and Contractors, and The Bank of San Antonio.  He is also a licensed Texas Real Estate Broker.

Tim supports many community initiatives including board service for organizations that have included the Housing Authority of Bexar County, Winston School of San Antonio, YMCA of Greater San Antonio, Mayor’s Blue Ribbon Commission on San Antonio’s Economy, Southwest Foundation Founders Council, Texas Cavaliers Charitable Foundation, The University of Texas at San Antonio Founder’s Council, The Mayor’s Task Force on Sustainable Buildings and Texas Public Radio.

Tim, an Eagle Scout who was raised in San Antonio and graduated from Baylor University, is married and has one daughter. He’s an avid swimmer, snowboarder and hiker who often finds solace in a small shop behind his home working on virtually anything mechanical in nature.

Sincerest thanks to Tim for all he does. And thanks to all of you for your ongoing support.

Warm regards,

joyce
