The University Interscholastic League (UIL) says it will not suspend San Antonio's John Jay High School from playing in future football games this season.
Members of the UIL executive committee made that announcement Wednesday morning after a public meeting with representatives from the Northside Independent School District, the Marble Falls School District, and members of the Texas Association of Sports Officials.
The meeting in Round Rock followed an incident last week at a football game held at Marble Falls High School. Two John Jay High School players in the Northside district were captured on video tape as one knocked down a referee and the other followed by striking the referee with his helmet.
At a press conference Tuesday, officials from Northside ISD told reporters the players involved allege the referee directed racial slurs at them, and the attack may have been encouraged by their assistant coach. The referee involved has said he did not make any racially-charged statements.
The assistant coach is on paid leave and the district has suspended the players from the team and classes as NISD conducts an investigation.
The UIL board Wednesday said the incident was inexcusable, and it will reconvene to discuss possible actions on September 23.
