Old Hwy. 90 Gets Relief From 30-Year Flooding Headache

The city has concluded work on a project it started ten months ago to address drainage on Old Highway 90 along Westwood Village Creek. Many other projects from the 2007-2012 bond program are also nearing completion.

"This project basically removed the old drainage structures that weren’t adequate and put in brand new ones -- four 10 ft. x 12 ft. sized culverts -- now it’s a big open way for the water to get through," said Mike Frisbe, the director of Capital Improvement Management Services. “We don’t have to worry about closing the road anymore; don’t have to have to worry about water backing up into the community.”

The $600,000 project addressed the drainage problem and also reconstructed the bridge over the creek.

“The fact that the street itself was collapsing when they were going to put the new culverts in showed you how much this area needed work done,” said Bonnie Weed, the president of the Cable Westwood Village Neighborhood Association.

Weed said the creek would succumb to heavy flooding during the 1980s.

This was onlythe first part of a bigger project. Using 2012 bond money, the second phase will attempt to alleviate flooding along Pinn Road near Leon creek by creating a detention pond. Some final details of the project need to be worked out, but it’s likely to start in May.
