Olympic Swimmers To Compete In San Antonio

Swimmers from all over the country are in San Antonio right now and more are on the way.  The USA Swimming Speedo Junior National Championships began Thursday at the Northside Swim Center and continue through Monday.

Then on Thursday, August 6, the USA Swimming Phillips 66 National Championships will take place with some of the biggest names in the sport.

“I think we’re expecting the biggest name, and that is Michael Phelps, who is scheduled to compete here,” said San Antonio Sports Senior Vice President Mary Ullmann Japhet. “We also have Cullen Jones and many other Olympians. There will be 900 in all of the Nationals. There are 800 in the Junior Nationals.”

The athletes are looking to the future.

“A lot of them are here to make times that would qualify them for the Olympic Trials next summer that lead of course right into the Rio games in 2016,” said Japhet.

The Olympic team will be training at this facility next summer prior to going to the Olympics in Rio. Japhet believes they want to come and test the waters in this pool in hopes of being on that team next summer.
