Online Paywall On The Horizon For Express-News
The San Antonio Express-News will be adopting a paywall for online content by the end of the Summer.
Newspapers across the nation have been looking for ways to convince their readers to pay for looking at their journalism online. After years of providing their content free online, San Antonio's Express-News is about to take the next step, a step that comes along with several other changes at the paper.
"Sometime in the Spring or early Summer we expect to go to a premium web site mainly aimed at our subscribers, but also to attract people who want something extra, and that will be the home of our enterprise and investigative reporting," said Express-News Editor Mike Leary in an extended interview on The Source.
Leary said the paywall won’t be as restrictive as other papers -- breaking news and many daily stories will still be available free online -- but the investigative articles and other in-depth stories will require a paid subscription.
Leary was not able to provide how much the online subscription rate would be.
