People Replace Cars On Broadway For Siclovia This Sunday

San Antonio's Síclovía is back in action on Sunday and invites people to "come play in the street." On Sunday, Broadway Street will be closed to cars and trucks between Lion's Field and Alamo Plaza.

The idea for the event originates 30 years ago in Bogota, Colombia, a city growing in fame for its efforts to cut down on pollution and get residents more active.

"You can skate, walk, run, ride, [it] doesn't make any difference. Just come out and enjoy yourself," said Geoffrey Crabtree, the acting chairman of the YMCA board.

The YMCA has been involved with Síclovía from the start, but this is the second time the organization has hosted it under its name.

Crabtree said he thinks the mindset about health and wellness is changing in San Antonio.

"Going to the gym isn't for everybody," he said, "but if you just walk, just get out and be active, that's the first step to health and wellness, and that's one of the reasons why we're doing Síclovía is because it is that first step."

The event kicks off at 10 a.m. Sunday, where Reclovías -  group exercises - will take place. Hula-hooping, sidewalk chalking, street tennis, jump rope and soccer games will all be part of the fun.
