Reinvestment Zones Expand To Include More Areas Of Town

The City of San Antonio’s Inner City Reinvestment/Infill Policy for several years has focused on reinvesting in neighborhoods, businesses and properties, particularly in urban areas that have gone untouched for decades.

But now the program is expanding, and District 5 Councilman David Medina couldn’t be more excited.

"This is really going to work toward encouraging reinvestment, revitalization, and grab the attention of businesses, future businesses, developers, and potential investors to be able to come here and invest their money right here in District 5 and create economic development on this corridor,” he said.

Thursday, he announced the West Southcross corridor between Quintana Road and Dwight Middle School now fits inside the ICRIP so that work can be done to rejuvenate the area.

Andy Castillo, who was born on the Northside, says he’s worked for two years to bring reinvestment money to his Southcross neighborhood.

He owns a historic building and wants to see work on roads and sidewalks begin soon along with additional trees and vegetation.

Many more areas of town are now included in the program. Medina says it’s important that these neighborhoods receive the attention they deserve.

"Over the past couple of decades there had been such tremendous growth outside of San Antonio that some of these neighborhoods in the inner city, inside [Loop] 410, had suffered a bit," he said.
