Retired Schoolteacher Helps TPR Win First "Rusty Hubcap" Award

Nathan Cone
Donald Braun, with the "Rusty Hubcap" award.

Texas Public Radio was tickled to learn recently that the first ever Rusty Hubcap Award has been bestowed upon the organization by the Car Talk Vehicle Donation Program. Donald Braun, a Floresville native and current resident of San Antonio, donated his 1948 Buick Roadmaster to the program, identifying TPR as the recipient of the gift.

Donald, a tinkerer by nature, bought the car from a preacher in Garden Ridge, and commenced to working on the 65-plus-year-old beauty. But after “busting his knuckles” over it, and upon moving to a new, smaller home in San Antonio, Donald realized he’d need to part with the car. Hearing the call for vehicle donations on TPR, he went online and signed up to donate the Buick through the Car Talk Vehicle Donation Program. Now, he says, he got more value as a tax write-off for the car than he would have if he had simply sold it.

Donald’s favorite programs on TPR include “The Splendid Table,” “World Music with Deirdre Saravia,” and of course, “Car Talk.” Thanks for your donation, Donald!
