Rey Saldaña Running For City Council Office (pun intended)

The deadline for candidates to file for the San Antonio City Council elections is Friday. So far,  District 4 is the only office with no candidates listed.

The incumbent, Rey Saldaña, said that’ll change Thursday when he runs for the office, quite literally.

The Stanford graduate and former Stanford Cardinal baseball player will run seven and a half miles, do nearly 100 push-ups, 170 squats and finish with 10 burpees – a sort of squat-push up combo.

The exercises represent the work that’s been done while he’s been in office.

"There's been a ton of work that we've gotten done in the district over the last few years," said Saldaña. "We decided on four elements and those four elements were translating into the representation."

Saldana said he'll run to represent the sidewalks added to the district, the push-ups are for Animal Care Services increased live-release rate, squats for the number of volunteers who have helped him get the work done, and the burpees (a squat, push-up combo) are for buildings that have sat dilapidated for a decade.

Saldaña said he’s not worried about the relatively late start.

"I will be on the ballot," he said. "I really wanted to organize around the event and making sure that it signified the work that we've been putting in over the last two years."

No one has stepped up to challenge Saldaña so far -- for his council seat or athletic ability.
