The Texas Book Festival-San Antonio isn’t until next April, but there’s something you may want to know about that’s coming up sooner. Director Katy Flato says a new Fiction Writing Contest associated with the fest is looking for the writers of tomorrow.
“Any student in 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grade in Bexar County is invited to submit stories for the contest. There are cash prizes for the top three winners in grades nine and ten and then in grades eleven and twelve. And the really great thing is that the first place story in each division will be presented at the Book Festival as part of our programming.”
The writing contest deadline is January 6th. Last year’s Book Festival was attended by at least four thousand people, but if you happened to have missed it, Katy Flato says there are plenty of reasons to put it on your calendar for 2014.
“It is a free day of literary happenings down at the San Antonio Central Library and the Southwest School of Art. We bring in seventy authors from all over the nation, and we have book signings, book sales, food trucks, music tents, a technology tent, [and] lots of activities for families and children that will inspire them to read," Flato says. "This is an opportunity for readers and writers to unite in a celebration of ideas, libraries, books and literary culture.”
