San Antonio Couple Stranded In Path Of Two Hurricanes

San Antonio resident Joe Conger, his wife and friends are stranded on Tortola in the British Virgin Islands following a direct hit from Hurricane Irma.

Conger, a former reporter for KENS 5, said it took five years to persuade his wife to take a sailing trip.

Last Friday, they arrived in the British Virgin Islands. The vacation turned into a nightmare on Wednesday, when the island took a direct hit from category five Hurricane Irma.

Conger and his wife had to relocate three times: the first after the roof on their hotel was ripped off by 200 mile per hour winds.

"The island is decimated. There are people in the street just walking with their belongings on their back. Their homes are gone. This island was lush and green," Conger said. "It looks like somebody took a match and lit the hills on fire, because all that's left standing is timber bark. All the trees have been exfoliated."

Conger, his wife and friends are currently trying to get a flight to Puerto Rico because Hurricane Jose is now heading their way.
