The San Antonio Food Bank is adding an extra 106,000 sq. ft. of space to its far West Side warehouse.
On Wednesday leaders held a ribbon cutting and dedication for the expansion project that will help the food bank serve more people. President Eric Cooper said before the extra space, the food bank often turned away donations they needed.
"No one's nourished with products sitting in a warehouse," Cooper said. "What the expanded facility allows us to do is it just allows us to be able to take advantage of those opportunities when they come. With our limited space before, we would have to turn down those opportunities just because of capacity. Now we've got the capacity to say yes."
The food bank also announced a re-planting of its two-acre Spurs Community Garden, and the addition of a unique outdoor children's pavilion.
Food bank leaders say the overall expansion allows them to offer healthier and fresher foods to the 58,000 people it feeds each week.
