San Antonio city leaders remained undaunted after learning that the Alamo City had been left out of Google’s plans for its next expansion of Fiber.
San Antonio was one of nine cities Google considered for the ultra-high-speed Internet installations. Mayor Ivy Taylor’s office issued a statement Tuesday morning confirming Google’s decision to go with four other cities: Nashville, Atlanta, and Raleigh-Durham and Charlotte, North Carolina.
Council member Ron Nirenberg, who chairs the City’s Comprehensive Plan committee, said Google had made a significant investment in the city. The committee was told last week that Google had hired two employees in San Antonio, assigned to work with the City on developing necessary infrastructure.
“The reality is, San Antonio is still working very hard with Google, and their goal is that we create an ecosystem for digital communication infrastructure, that allows us to be on the leading edge of the information technology movement," Nirenberg said.
The committee also heard last week about the need to proceed with Fiber development in a measured way, one that would protect historic sites and environmental assets.
Nirenberg was not discouraged — he said as one of the fastest-growing cities in the county, San Antonio could expect strong, super fast broadband as part of its future.
Over the past year, the City of San Antonio has worked closely with Google Fiber to bring their ultra high-speed Internet service to San Antonio. In the process, Google has developed strong relationships with our community at various levels, and they have seen the value that San Antonio has to offer, as well as the benefits Google Fiber can bring to this city. Providing faster Internet for our citizens remains a priority for the City as we continue to work diligently with Google Fiber and others to bring this important technology to San Antonio. --Mayor Ivy Taylor
