The McNay Art Museum is running a series of weekday art education events and I got a preview of one. It's called ArtFULL Wednesdays, and they happen each Wednesday at noon.
"It gives people their weekly cultural dose," says Rosemary Hickman, the McNay's Semmes Foundation Museum Educator.
The question I had for Ms. Hickman is if someone comes on Wednesday at noon, what can they expect?
"We'll be making stops around the museum's permanent collection. We'll go upstairs and look at some really early German art from the 15th century and then we'll end up right in the middle of modernism in the early 20th century," she said. "We'll look at the art together, discuss it, see what we notice. I'll kind of sprinkle in some historical facts and answer questions about the artist's biography."
It's essentially a semi-intimate gallery tour targeting their German collection, with lots of facts, stories, and question-answer sessions. Oh, and then there's food.
"This spring we're doing all German food. We try to make the food connection to the art. And so with the German series we're looking at things like strudel, sausage, beer, and even sauerkraut and pickles later on in the spring."
It happens weekly and if you've paid museum admission, it doesn't cost anything extra.
"Every Wednesday at the McNay there's a free program from noon to one. It's free with your museum admission; if you're a museum member there's no charge at all."
As to whom they're hoping will come, the qualifications sound like they apply to just about everyone.
"We're just looking for folks who want to learn something about art, but absolutely no prior knowledge is needed."
