The Alamo Colleges recently set the stage to remove majors from their associates degrees, prompting outrage from a group of vocal students and parents. The decision was made by presidents and vice-chancellors of the five Alamo Colleges: Palo Alto College, Northwest Vista College, St. Phillip's College and San Antonio College.
Despite not having a role in the decision the Board of Trustees saw 20 people spoke in opposition to the change at last night's meeting. The change actually occurred last April, and affects only incoming freshman. Students weren't verbally explained the shift until last month.
Students think believe it devalues the work they are doing to not have the major printed on their certificates upon completion while administrators argue the change will make it easier for students to transfer to four-year programs.
