Sightings of so-called "creepy clowns" and the resulting paranoia have inspired a wave of coulrophobia across the country. Though most cases are determined to be hoaxes and copycats, there has been no shortage of clown-related media attention or police investigation. San Antonio's Northside ISD even sent a letter home to parents last week, after an anonymous clown account posted a threat on social media.
Is this mass hysteria a familiar trend, or something new? Are actual clowns the real victims of the ongoing creepy-clown craze? What is it about these painted faces that so many find inherently creepy?
