Right now the I-35 to I-10 bypass is only a dream. There’s no actual plan and no transportation studies have been made to look at the feasibility.
But Schertz Mayor Michael Carpenter says it’s clear to him this connector would benefit the entire region.
“There are several considerations – one of them is the traffic that we already see and have on 1604 which connects 35 and ten – that we also see with 410 – and you see when you come all the way downtown in San Antonio where things connect.”
Cibolo Mayor Allen Dunn also backs the idea and wants to see it given serious consideration by the regional mobility authority and TxDot. And there is an existing passage that just needs to be expanded.
“FM 1103 already comes down maybe about 40 percent of the way so you’re only talking about seven additional miles – and you are going through areas of land that aren’t currently developed.”
Carpenter notes that this is the fastest growing region in the nation – and the longer it takes to make the bypass happen the more expensive and less effective the project becomes.
“things get more expensive as times passes – more development comes and more right of way has to be purchased – that becomes more expensive.”
Carpenter estimates the bypass would cost about $150 million dollars to complete. And the first step is to get the conversation started.
