San Antonio's live music scene has grown over the years and writers, promoters, programmers, and venue owners are all working to make that change for the better.
Known for metal shows in the 70s and 80s, San Antonio has expanded over the years to include jazz, hip hop, psych rock, and garage rock today. Developing a scene is difficult and takes time, especially when in such close proximity to Austin. As programming at local venues has improved, more artists have become interested in playing shows in San Antonio. Venues like Paper Tiger, the Aztec Theater, The Korova, and the 502 Bar are all hoping to bring people in town for shows and events like the Maverick Music Festival are helping put Alamo City on the map.
Bands are also increasing their reach thanks to technology and new opportunities. Local groups now can interact with national artists through Maverick and can connect with both fans and promoters via social media. Contacting out-of-state bands through Facebook or Twitter has made bringing a variety to SA even easier than before.
