Texas, according to the Texas Education Agency, has seen a remarkable improvement in the number of students completing their high school education, from 9.4percent dropping out in 2009 to 6.3 percent in 2012.
But these numbers are being challenged as not showing the whole picture and being misleading, though there does seem to be consensus that it is getting better.
San Antonio ISD instituted several intervention programs geared towards helping students earn a diploma, and according to SAISD they have seen the number drop by 10 percent since 2008.
What works when it comes to preventing drop outs?
David Udovich, executive director of SAISD district initiatives, talks about their programs and we also talk to Jim Mendiola, the San Antonio-born filmmaker behind "Skipping Up," a new Independent Lens documentary on PBS.org that follows a class of students in San Antonio's Mark Twain Middle School.
Finally, the San Antonio-based Intercultural Development Research Association, an education-focused nonprofit, weighs in on the numbers and how San Antonio can do more to help its students.
