The Source: Sikh Culture On Display At ITC

Wikicommons http://bit.ly/1MqGVvR

For the past few months, a commonly misunderstood culture and religion has been on display at the Institute of Texan Cultures downtown. Sikh: Legacy of the Punjab hopes to demystify Sikhism, a monotheistic religion from South Asia often confused with other religions.

Ever since terrorists struck the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 Sikhs have been the target of increasing discrimination and hate-crimes. Despite being the fifth-largest religion in the world, their customs are largely unknown in this country. For instance, the wearing of their traditional turban is often misidentified.

Guest:

  • Simran Jeet Singh, Professor of Religion at Trinity University and Senior Religion Fellow for the Sikh Coalition
  • James Benavides, spokesperson for UTSA's Institute of Texan Cultures
