South San School To Axe All 33 Teachers, Principal, Deputy For School’s Non-Performance

South San ISD

A middle school in the South San Antonio Independent School District will have to hire a completely new team of teachers, after it failed to meet state standards for more than two years.

South San’s Dwight Middle School has had an ‘Improvement Required’ rating from the Texas Education Agency for two years and now has to go through a formal reconstitution process. While that term means something different for each school, South San District Communications Director, Ed Suarez, said for Dwight that meant that all 33 teachers, the Principal, and the Vice Principal, would be let go.

“The teachers that are currently at Dwight can reapply for other positions within the school district, but that school is going to have to be, as we said, reconstituted with an entirely new staff. Very few of the current teachers there will probably remain,” said Suarez.

The school was found to be lacking in Post College Readiness and did not meet the needs for student progress, based on its State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (or STAAR) test scores. The first order of business will be to find a new principal, a process that will begin in the next month or so.

“That [new] principal will begin looking at applications and looking at employees, beginning the process of hiring,” said Suarez. The current principal has been on the job for three years. The current lot of teachers would remain through the end of the school year.
