Spurs Fans Brave Weather, Greet Team At Airport Gate

Jun 13, 2014

The San Antonio Spurs defeated the Miami Heat last night by a score of 107-86, the second game in row with 20 point edge. In a sea of silver and black, fans of the Spurs crowded outside the team's private airport terminal early this morning to wait for the team to arrive back home.

About 200 fans stood under flashing skies following a torrential downpour less than an hour before. A DJ played music to keep them entertained. Superfan Lindsey Garcia said she drove from Lytle to welcome the team.

“Unlike the Heat, we stay," Garcia said. "Even though the A/C was out we still stayed, and here it was raining and we’re still here, and even if it pours we’re going to stand here and we’re going to support them all the way."

Like Garcia, Linda Lopez said she has been at the airport to welcome to the team home all through the playoffs.

“I will come in lightning, snowing, and I’ve been in the hot sun before when it was real hot," Lopez said. "I was out there to bring them on. I love my Spurs."

The plane didn’t arrive until close to 3:00 a.m. with fans ranging from small children to senior citizens greeting Tony, Timmy, Manu and the rest of the crew. Being there for almost three hours, Cole Meyers said it’s always worth the wait, especially when the goal is so close.

“We’ve got to shove it in the face of Miami," Meyers said. "They thought they had us beat, they thought they had the big three; you can’t buy championships, you’ve got to have the real team. The Spurs are the best team in the NBA. It’s been proven!”

The Spurs lead the Finals 3-1. Game five is Sunday night at 7 p.m. CST at the AT&T Center here in San Antonio.
