St. Mary’s University has announced its first-ever full-ride scholarship with a stipend for students performing community service.

The St. Mary’s Presidential Scholarship is open to any law school applicant with outstanding academic achievement and a commitment of service.

University President Thomas Mengler said it’s unique to require scholarship recipients to maintain a high level of community service through all three years of law school. It’s expected to be a tough competition.

"St. Mary's University has never offered this kind of scholarship," Mengler said. "We expect that given their background, it's a habit for them and one where they will seek opportunities, but the expectation is there."

Mengler said the service component is a way for St. Mary’s to measure qualitative success alongside quantitative success.

Recipients of the presidential scholarship will be awarded the full tuition required to complete the Juris Doctor degree, along with a $5,000 annual stipend. St. Mary’s will consider applicants for awards as early as this fall.
