Take Note Gives San Antonio Teens A Musical Outlet

Take Note, a music group made up of local teens ages 13-18, originates with the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department.

"We take the kind of garage-band students to a pre-professional level, training them for all kinds of venues and events here in the city of San Antonio," said Program Manager Mona Lisa Montgomery.

Students earn their place in Take Note through auditions.

"Every year we take audition packets, CD/DVD submissions by the interested students, and they are judged by a panel of musicians and vocalists, and then they are selected to participate in the band for the year," Montgomery said.

Students chosen for the Take Note band perform in front of the public for city events.

"They average about from twelve to 20 a year," Montgomery said.

She said that it is a family commitment, with parents having to get kids to practices and performances, but it pays off for many of them.

"Jessica Espinoza made it to 'X Factor.' We have two that just recently graduated with music scholarships," Montgomery said.

Parks currently has a call out for audition materials and the deadline is Friday, November 15.
