Thursday at the state capitol was the seventh annual Texas Muslim Capitol Day. But this year was different because for the first time anti-Muslim protestors organized on social media and were there to protest.
As the Muslim group sang the Star Spangled Banner on the steps of the Texas Capitol the protestors continued to yell objections like "Great song, now obey the laws of the land," "If you are going to sing it then put your hand over your heart like a real American," and "Assimilate or leave."
As the Muslim group made up of Texans from across the state gathered on the Capitol steps for their event several dozen protestors continued to shouted slurs at them and held signs that read slogans like “Go Home and Take Obama with you” “Radical Islam is the New Nazi” and “Save America Stop Islam.”
Then as Ruth Nasrullah, the communications coordinator for the Texas chapter CAIR Council on American Islam Relations was preparing to speak at the podium – one of the protestors commandeered the microphone.
"The false prophet Mohamed. Islam will never dominate the United States and by the grace of God it will not dominate Texas," she said.
Nasrullah told Texas Matters that the experience was scary.
