The Texas Water Development Board And How Texas Has Influenced America

Random House (publisher)

Re-broadcast from June 22, 2012: In a state as big as Texas, there are some serious questions about how to provide this vital resource to the over 25 million people who live here. Our state thinks of itself as strong and independent, often distancing itself (with the help of state lawmakers) from the federal government, but how much of Texas has crept into national politics?

Texas is to drought as...

For the first time since March 2011, all of Texas is out of the worst stage of drought. The weekly U.S. Drought Monitor map released Thursday shows none of Texas in exceptional drought, but we are not out of the dry wildfire-prone woods yet. In this summer's issues of Texas Monthly, the focus was the lack of water in the state – how it’s impacting cities, industries, farmers and ranchers. Nate Blakeslee writes about the state’s water development board and it’s $50 billion proposal for how to deal with the water shortage.

How Texas has influenced America

Gail Collins is a columnist for the New York Times. Her new book is called “As Texas Goes... How the Lone Star State Hijacked the American Agenda,” and looks at how Texas has influenced national politics.
