Who is today's Birthday Bard? Why, it's William Shakespeare! In truth, his birth date is rather hazy. Nevertheless, April 23, 1564, is when the BBC celebrates it, and that's good enough for me. However, to keep all bases covered, his baptism record shows the date April 26th on it.
On Friday evening, April 24, KPAC will continue the 5-part series The Tobin Collection: A Musical Vision. The series is exploring various facets of The Tobin Collection, housed at The McNay Art Museum. This collection of over 10,000 theatre pieces, ranging from costume and scenic designs, to scale models of sets, called maquettes, is overwhelming in its range.
This week's program, Friday evening at 7 o'clock, will take both a visual and musical look at the collection's Shakespeare. Jody Blake, Tobin curator, will be our guide, but with musical interjections by Cole Porter, Sergei Prokofiev, David Amram, Leonard Bernstein, and Giuseppe Verdi. All-in-all, this is a great opportunity to "Brush Up Your Shakespeare."
