The shooting occored on Evergreen between N. Main Ave and Howard Street before 4:00 PM Thursday

One San Antonio police officer is fighting for his life, another is in serious condition, and a suspect involved is dead. The officers were responding to a suspicious persons call Thursday afternoon when they became targets.

Police have not identified the injured officers, and did not suggest a motive for why the suspects fired at the officers. The chief says the officer shot in the head is not expected to survive.

The two officers were on patrol just before 4:00PM, when they spotted two men at the corner of Evergreen and Main just north of downtown.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus says both officers stepped out of their squad car and at least one suspect began shooting.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus updates the press outside SAMMC two hours after the shooting

“One officer was struck in the head. The other officer was struck in the chin. The bullet lodged in his upper torso.”

McManus says one officer then fired back.

“One officer went down by the driver’s door – the one who was shot in the head – the other officer pulled him from the line of fire to front of the vehicle and then returned fire himself after being shot in the chin.”

The officer hit and killed one suspect. The other was taken into police custody. The officers were transported to San Antonio Military Medical Center. At that time the chief said they were listed in grave and serious condition Thursday night.
