U.S. Poet Laureate Natasha Trethewey Speaking At UTSA

Tonight, the U.S. Poet Laureate is the featured speaker at UTSA’s Creative Writing Series; Natasha Trethewey is expected to read from her Pulitzer Prize-winning poetry collection.

Trethewey was serving as the poet laureate for the State of Mississippi when she was selected as the 19th poet laureate of the United States in June. Her first poems, titled, “Domestic Work,” won the inaugural 1995 Cave Canem poetry prize. Her third collection, "Native Guard,” was awarded the 2007 Pulitzer Prize.

San Antonio Poet Laureate Carmen Tafolla, has high praise for Trethewey’s work.

“Her poetry is absolutely unique," said Tafolla. "It’s powerful. It’s simple. It doesn’t hide in flowery words. It really is very impactful.”

Tafolla said UTSA was fortunate to have booked Trethewey before she was named National Poet Laureate. Tafolla also will read at the event, along with the State Poet Laureate of Texas from 2011, Dave Parsons.

The free event starts at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, at the University Center Denman Room on UTSA's Main Campus.
