Van De Putte Campaign Rolls Out First Paid Ad, Praises DPS Action Along The Border
Democratic lieutenant governor candidate Leticia Van De Putte has rolled out a new online ad praising the Texas Department of Public Safety’s efforts along the border.
While ad talks about the efforts by the DPS to keep this surge of immigrant children safe, it also points to the difference between her response to the situation and Dan Patrick's, her opponent in the lieutenant governor race.
"Make no mistake, Washington needs to do more, but shame on those that would use this tragedy to instill fear, intolerance and hate towards all immigrants,” Van De Putte said.
Professor Mark Jones, heads up the political science department at Rice University, said the ad also carefully focuses on the DPS efforts to help immigrants along the border, rather than focus on capturing people and placing them in federal custody.
"In many ways this ad was designed to reach a middle ground through it’s title, that is talking about how the DPS is heroic, which is a relatively uncontroversial topic but at the end it really hits on the topic that it was designed to: criticizing Dan Patrick for what Senator Van De Putte would characterize as hateful Hispanic rhetoric,” Jones said.
Van De Putte recorded the add in both English and Spanish.
