The San Antonio Water System reports that attempts have been made to scam customers over the phone. The scammers are calling customers with the intention of gaining access to people’s homes, getting details of financial information or asking for actual transfers of money for purported utility-related payments.
SAWS spokeswoman Anne Hayden said there were some things customers had to be aware of. “We only do debt collection right before we may have to cut off water service due to non-payment. So if that were the case, you would likely be aware that there’s some kind of debt involved with SAWS. However, you won’t receive a phone call from the blue asking for money,” said Hayden.
She added that if it were a call from SAWS, a customer should see San Antonio Water System on their caller-ID. If a customer had any doubt over the authenticity of a caller, they could hang up and call SAWS Customer Service at 704-SAWS and they would go through and verify that call, or not, as the case might be.
Hayden also pointed out that SAWS employees would not collect money at anyone’s door, nor would enter a customer’s home unless they were specifically called and asked to do so.
