They come from all over the United States, and even the world. Twelve talented young pianists are in San Antonio this week to compete in the twelfth San Antonio International Piano Competition. The performances are taking place at Trinity University's Ruth Taylor Recital Hall.

The Gold Medalist receives a $15,000 prize as well as an opportunity to perform with the San Antonio Symphony, Fredericksburg Music Club, and Cactus Pear Music Festival. The Silver Medalist receives a $10,000 prize as well as additional performance opportunities, and the Bronze Medalist receives a $5,000 prize.

You can meet the competitors, from as far away as Korea, China and Russia, at this link.

In addition to repertoire by the established masters of classical music, SAIPC has commissioned Texas composer Matthew Mason to write music for the competition. Each of the five finalists will perform his commissioned work as part of the competition.

The competition takes place Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday with a Winners Recital on Sunday afternoon that is free and open to the public.
